Check out the new Michigan Main Street Video produced to show the benefits of economic development and historic preservation in our downtowns.
The Iron Mountain Main Street (IMMS) program is a public/private partnership that encourages economic development and historic preservation through community participation by utilizing the Main Street 4-Point Approach.
This approach was first developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1977 as a way to encourage the comprehensive and incremental investment and revitalization of downtowns across the country.
The four points include:
Design- Enhancing the downtown's physical environment such as historic buildings and creating an inviting atmosphere through building improvements, window displays, streetscape improvements and landscaping. The Iron Mountain Main Street also focuses on building maintenance, historic restorations, appropriate new construction and community planning.
Business Development- Strengthening the economic base by working to retain local business while also diversifying and expanding. By helping existing businesses to expand and recruiting new businesses, the Iron Mountain Main Street helps to make businesses competitive and expand into underutilized downtown properties.
Promotion- Marketing downtown's unique characteristics to residents, visitors, and business owners. The Iron Mountain Main Street develops a comprehensive promotional strategy through advertising, special events, marketing campaigns, and retail activities to encourage investment and shopping in the commercial district.
Organization - Involving all of downtown's stakeholders, getting everyone working towards a common goal, and driving the volunteer based program. The Iron Mountain Main Street organizational structure consists of a governing board and standing committees. Volunteers are coordinated and supported by a salaried Main Street manager.
Iron Mountain is one of fifteen communities in Michigan participating in the Main Street Program. Through support from the Michigan Main Street Center in Lansing, the community is provided extensive technical support to help revitalize the downtown.
